Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may be present as simple steatosis and progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This inflammation of the liver tissue is a prerequisite to hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis. NAFLD represents an important and common cause of liver disease worldwide.
